A co-worker was telling me he has heard of these used as smoke elements. Anyone else? What would they be used for?

never heard of either of those used for that. but there is little limit as to what you can use for smoke generation as long as there isnt a toxic element.

whether it would produce good flavor dunno.

Never have used corn cobs or pineapple tops. However, I have used the dried peelings from a pineapple. A very sweet smoke, used to add a couple of handfuls on the coals. They have to be dry.

This is an interesting question. Recently I was smoking some boneless skinless chicken breast on my WSM and I was running low on apple wood chips. I thought about cutting up a couple apples and putting them in the fire. Anyone ever try smoking with the actual fruit instead of the wood?

I bought cob smoked bacon before and found it to be quite delicious. I'd be willing to try pimeapple tops, but I would start with a short cook and inexpensive meat.

I've used corn cobs for smoking bacon, years ago, and liked the results, best I can remember.

I've also heard of using hickory nuts, and pecan shells, but haven't tried them.

Corncobs make a wonderful mild smoke. Great for fish, cheese, etc. You want to make sure they're very dry before you used them. Also shells of the nuts are great. Pecan, walnut and hickory shells good for smoking. Nut hulls are also great for smoking. Make sure they're completely dry before using them.

Have used corn cobs, as well as pistachio shells on occaision, never tried pineapple tops or peelings. Try it on some inexpensive meat and go from there!
