Overhead storage project

I bought this garage overhead storage rack from Home Depot

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-4...-Ceiling-Mount-Garage-Rack-ACR4896B/303493157

It's 8 foot in length but in my case, my ceiling joists are on 18" centers, so I'm limited to 72" instead of 96".

I'm thinking about using channel iron similar to how my garage door opener is hanging. Use lag bolts and span two joists, then bolt the storage rack bracket to the channel iron . I'm trying to find the problem with doing this, but I don't see one , right now . Anyone else see a problem ?

18" OC is an odd one I never heard before. Are you sure it's not 19 1/4". Thats more common for engineered lumber and hits 96"
Either way the AI (angle iron ) should be fine as long as it's a good gage.

That is exactly what I would do, as long as they are heavy enough to support the overhang.

You're right. I got back up in the attic again and got a better measurement. They're on 16" centers.

Now the problem is getting my stud finder to work on that popcorn ceiling :) , but my project did get easier .

We have exposed joists so probably a little easier, but used cross-beams to attach:

Also so you don't make the mistake we did - be sure to check the direction of the vertical beams. You can sort of see their upside down; small hole should be on top. Not fallen off yet, but wish we had done it right.

EDIT: Oh, and we found putting down big moving boxes -unfolded of course - on top of the grates made it a lot easier to slide stuff around. Just the biggest boxes from HD.
