Their blooms stunk to high heavens and their marble sized fruit and leaves were a mess around our patio.
Yes, the company I used to work for had ornamental pears planted all along (a rather long) incoming driveway. When the trees were in bloom, it was nice to look at, you just didn't want to inhale(!). I'm told that the smell attracts the pollinating insects, flies in this case.Some ornamental pear blooms smell like rotting fish.
