Oregon Scientific Talking Thermometer - Couple of Questions

Ok so I got this as a gift and as far as it goes the reviews are pretty good for it so I will give it a shot.

I like the idea of knowing the meat temp without having to take the lid off of the WSM.

I have a couple of questions.

One - Does anyone have any experience with this unit, things to know?

Two - More generic, but is there a way to protect the probe wire from wear when setting the lid on it? Would it hurt to run the wire through the top vent?

Thanks

One of my thermometers is made by Oregon Scientific, but it's a different model. It works well, though.

Some folks are happy setting the lid on the probe cable. I prefer to feed it through the vent. It's a little inconvenient, but seems safer.

I have one Shawn, but I don't use it.I use my BBQ GURU and my REDThermapen.
When I check out all my thermometers the Oregon is always spot on. Nice to know I have a back-up.you never know.Plus its cool to hear it talking.

Hey fellers! ...check out the "eyelets" sold by BBQ-Guru....$10 for two, including postage and installation tool....replaces one of your strap bolts and allows your therm cable the safety of passing through the smokers wall
