Not A Weber but....TEN HUT!!!

Great pics, and what a cool way to begin competition. No matter how you perform, you'll be the envy of every other team.

Names: Maybe.... Meatchant Marines (might not want to claim any affiliation with marines if you're not), Special Forkses, or Glory and Hombres. Just playing with words. Best of luck.

Hahaha...good ones. We'll add those to the list. Thanks! :)

Going with movie titles, we've come up with

Aporkalypse Now
Full Meat Jacket
A Few Good Meats
Porktoon
Men Who Stare At Pigs
Inglorious Bastards (although the movie is spelled "Basterds")

Hi Chris,

Love that smoker !

If I can make a suggestion or two... For your entry into the competition ring, start out doing backyard BBQ contests until you feel ready for the Pro contests. Reason is this... In California we have the CBBQA where there is a ROY (Rookie of the Year) awards. This is a highly competitive group of 1st time Pro BBQ competitors. There are qualifications to be met such that if you cooked so much as a single Pro BBQ contest (even as a helper!), you can not qualify for the ROY race. Most Backyard BBQ contests are judged by KCBS CBJs. It's a chance to get your feet wet and learn the ropes from other more seasoned teams. Also, at most of these contests, you and your team will have a Pro BBQ pitmaster and/or team member to mentor you and your team. All big pluses before moving into the Pro contests.

There is a backyard BBQ contest the weekend after next in Ontario. If you go, Will see you there ;)

Wishing you the very best of luck and Excellence in BBQ.

Bob

Chris,

Some additional information...

There is an excellent BBQ Pitmaster that logs onto this forum. He's a member of the CBBQA. He started out with the BBQ Backyard contests. Last year he moved into the Pro BBQ circuit as a Rookie, taking the ROY race to new heights. Ended his first Pro BBQ year in 1st place in the ROY. This year, he's in 2nd place for all of California and also doing Very well in the KCBS race.

Just learned the Ontario Backyard BBQ contest is now KCBS Licensed contest! Great for them !!!

Good start, right? Could be modified with shelves or whatever.
All we have to cook with at this point are my 18.5 WSM, his BGE and a couple of Performers.
We could make due with those.

Wow excellent Score, I could of swore I saw that jeep on the way home last night drive south on the 405 freeway ( between Rosecrans and Crenshaw Blvd. around 9:00PM) I though to myself that is a unique set up..

also in reference to your observation of not having experience in competition..
I was watching the show BBQ Pitmasters, there was the biggest BBQ Comp American Royal in KC, well one of the "Non-professional" teams took 3rd in the Chicken portion ( after getting advice from Myron Mixon) and I recall seeing them using some WSM's and some OTG's.

So anything is do-able, you have a good set up to start, let us know what Competition you are entering and we will look for you..

Great advice from you as usual Bob. Don't think we're ready for anything yet. Friend#1 is just getting back today with the pit, but the CBBQA sounds ideal. Neither of us has ever cooked or helped in any comp, so we should qualify.
Thanks again! :)
