Non-ApPEELing Lid Issue

This has been an ongoing issue with my kettle lid. I was hoping the pealing was over, but it recently came back.

The coating on the underside of the lid is peeling off. I keep brushing it off so it stays off the food, but it just keeps coming off like it's been coated several times. It did not start peeling until after over a year of normal use. Weird, 'eh?

Anyone else seen this before?

This is from the Weber website:

Don't worry, it's not paint. The inside surfaces of our grill lids are not painted, they are coated with baked-on porcelain enamel which cannot peel. What you are noticing is a deposit of grease and smoke that collects during normal use. During use, the grease and smoke vapors slowly oxidize into carbon and collect on the inside of your lid. This deposit will eventually peel, and looks very similar to paint. The peeling normally starts in the center of the lid and spreads outward. It may come off in sheets or flakes, and is shiny on one side and dull on the other. These carbon deposits are non-toxic. But you might want to regularly remove the build-up. Fortunately, the peeling is easy to remove. Simply brush off all loose particles with a stainless steel brush before you start grilling. To prevent future build-up, after every grilling session, while the grill lid is warm-not hot-wipe it with paper towels or a mild soap-and-water solution.

I had that too. Seems to me, I quit having that when I quit putting water in my defuser. Can't for sure say that's why it stopped doing that, but it hasn't done that since

It seems to happen (to me anyway) when it gets cold outside. Did not do it all summer long, but as soon as the temp got below 40 degrees out the peeling began. Now that I think about it, it has not peeled since early last spring.

From now on, I'm calling it "molting", as in "my kettle is molting". :)

Now that I know what the problem is, the underside of my lid is currently soaking in oven cleaner. It worked so well on my once gross WSM, this should be easy stuff.

Should be good as new is a few...

Its just scale. I've had it my WSM, OTS and my offset. Usually it seems worse if I smother my fire by shutting the vents or letting it burn off. I just brush it off if its any danger of falling in my food.

Yep; just carbon build up as others have mentioned. What that tells me is that you're an avid griller! Just scrape it off occasionally or consider it "seasoning".

"seasoning" lol

Just finished cleaning it up. The oven cleaner did fairly well, but that carbon layer is pretty tough. High-pressure water blasting did the trick. Removed 95% of the stuff so I will not worry about extra texture in the food for a few weeks anyway. Almost new is good enough.

This place is great. The things you learn here never end.

Thanks all. :wsm:
