Hey all. Just pulled the trigger on a new 14.5" WSM. This is my first smoker ever and first attempt at doing something like this. I have a good friend who is an expert, so I've been using him for tips. The smoker is on the way and should be here this weekend. I got the smoker, chimney, some wood chunks (apple & pecan), a wireless thermo. and some BBQ gloves. I figured go big or go home. I'm thinking about doing a chicken or butt for my first go around. Any tips or words of wisdom would be appreciated!

Congrats!!! a Butt is going to help season your WSM, it will coat the insides like there is no tomorrow and help seal up any possible leaks... chicken will runs at higher temps.. I would go with the butt since it's high in fat and will be a great first smoke... also remember to use the water pan you it helps spread the grease!!!

Welcome to TVWBB. I think there is some solid advice on first smoke. My first was ribs. But with the 14.5 I think the pork and chicken would be the wise choice.
