Newbie Question: Which is hotter?

Does the bottom cooking grate run hotter than the top cooking grate since it's closer to the coals -or- does the top cooking grate run hotter since it's closest to the dome where heat rises? Also, can anyone give me a guesstimate on the temperature differences between the two? If I want to measure temperature at the cooking grate, I didn't know whether to rely more on the top grate temp or the bottom grate temp. Thanks for any tips or advice!

Different folks report top is hotter and bottom is cooler and some say the top is cooler and bottom is hotter. Honestly, it varies between users.

Makes no difference to the end result. Get a remote thermo (like the 732) and measure it at the top grill and cook away.

I cooked 8 pork butts at one time having 4 on each rack. 4 were done while the remaining 4 needed another hour or so. Which 4 you ask? 2 from each rack were done leaving 2 from each rack requiring additional time. For me, I'd say they're pretty much even and not even a concern of mine.

Thanks for the great feedback, everyone! Chad- 8 butts - wow! I'd sure line to see a picture of how you positioned all that to fit!
