New to me WSM 18.5

Hi All. I just purchased this used WSM and it is the first I’ve ever owned. Vent code makes it a 2008. Do you guys know if the thermometer is stock and also if these came with handles or they were added by the previous owner? Thanks!

Thermometer and side handles are mods. Has a notch or side grommets been added for probe cables?

Thanks for the info Mike. Much appreciated. No notch or grommets that I can see. The guy I bought it from inherited it from his dad and never used it and knew nothing about it. From my past reading on this site it seems the notch method is more popular?

Can’t wait to cook on this. Picked up a used kettle about 8 months ago and have been very pleased.

Some like the notch because it’s quick. I would be more inclined to retrofit a now standard side grommet. But that’s just me.

Just curious - why would you go with the grommet vs. the notch method for the probes?

I retrofitted a grommet to my 22. I chose the grommet because I liked the look, it is accessible to both grates, and I trusted myself more with a drill than a cutting wheel on an angle grinder.

I Bought my WSM 18" "Classic" new in the year 2008 off Amazon.com and still does not have handles or thermometer.
