Don't know about your area but here in Arizona old cast iron cookware is gold. Used to see it all the time at garage sales and thrift stores people just giving it away. Not anymore and if you do see it they want big $$$ for it no matter what shape it's in.

Today i purchased the lodge 12 inch, 6quart Camp dutch oven, lid lifter, and the lodge book of dutch oven cooking to get me started. Early birthday present to myself.

Excellent choice! The vast majority of recipes out there are written for a 12" standard/shallow oven, so it's really the best place to start. In time, you'll probably add others for more versatility. I currently have 4 camp ovens (12" standard[6qt] & deep[8qt] [Lodge CI], a 10" standard[4qt] [Lodge CI] and a 12"[6qt] aluminum [Scott Mfg, now sold through GSI]) and use them all.

Here are a few of my favorite sites for recipes and info on DO cooking:
http://www.ironcooker.com/blog/campfire-cooking/baking-pan-size-versus-dutch-oven-reference/ - great for converting recipes from standard oven to DO
http://dutchovenmadness.blogspot.com/ - LOTS of great recipes. In particular, look for Hearty Corn Chowder and Meatball Monkey Bread
