New Req Tek


 
I really love my Recteq RT-700. It's going on 7 or 8 years old and still works like a charm. This new one, though, seems to me like an expensive and complicated way to replace a gas grill and smoker box. I think Ninja's approach of using gas for heat and pellets (if you want them) for smoke makes more sense.
 
Also, to produce this much heat - and with TWO burn pots, this new grill looks to be a bit of pellet hog. I think pellets are economical for low and slow, but not so much for high heat.
 
Jon, I watched Tom's review and agree with your comments on it down below. A small hopper for 2 burn pots doesn't make much sense. My Bullseye is pretty economical on pellet usage for my applications, but not so sure about where they are heading in the future. I have a friend in SC thats had a Pitboss 820 for over 8 years still going strong, and their new Phoenix looks promising. They seem to make a great product for the money. Ninja is on to something too, and hopefully they are long term reliable, but who knows with electronics involved. The old kettle is still reliable and timeless! I may look for a smaller one in the future.
 
He did note during low and slow it ran quite economically. But, let's face it. It's the old adage "how fast can you afford?" IOW your ability to make power (heat) is pretty much based on how much fuel you can force through the device (whether an engine or something else).
But, the thing is.................if you're using it like the blast furnace it can be, you're not leaving it for long periods so you're not likely to run out of fuel
 
I hate watching people like him cook badly and then criticize the tools they're using for their bad cooking. What did he think was gonna happen if he doesn't let the grill do it's job as intended. Constantly opening it up yakking away, then constantly playing with the ribs. Number one rule: I you're lookin' you ain't cookin'!! Then putting them in paper and all that butter. Giant YUKKO!
