Neglected ol Summit

Glad Weber came through Nate! Hate to be the one to point this out though, it looks like they sent you the wrong lower firebox. That one appears to be for a Summit Gold D which has the opening for the infrared burner on back.

Yeah, I noticed it had the infrared opening too. I figure I can get a piece of the ss sheet metal I have sheared down for a cover plate or pull the rear panel off the existing box.

That would work, though you could always check with Weber and see if they'll send out the correct one :D

Or get the IR burner and convert it to a "D" model ;-)

Trying to convert to a "D" is stepping into a world of hurt. At minimum, he would need the infrared burner assembly, the back rain cover for it, the gas line and he'd also need to replace the grill's manifold. To do it "right" he would need to pick up an ignition cable and might have to replace the controller on his ignition system, as well as the thermocouple and the cover box that goes next to the infrared burner. Lastly, he'd need to pick up a new front control panel cover to accommodate the additional knob and valve that feeds the burner.

If he wanted to try and kind of jerry rig it, he could just drill a hole in the existing control panel and slot the valve stem through it. Manually lighting the burner would dispense with the ignition and thermocouple, but he'd still need to replace the manifold and put in the infrared burner. Costs would be around $300 or more to do that.

We'll, it's not our money, I say convert it! ;)

Heheheheh. Perhaps Nate can convince a Weber CSR that it would be cheaper for them to send him all the parts necessary for a conversion than to send out the correct lower firebox :D (Especially considering that the firebox had to be shipped freight instead of UPS, FedEx or USPS.)

Call Weber and tell them they sent the wrong fire box. They will send you another. Heck, they may even send you what you need to install the IR burner if they don't have the correct box.

I'll probably be calling weber and let them know . The weird thing is, is that the box says its for the summit gold a,b and d. Of course you guys know the d model has the ir burner. We'll see what they say. If I'm really lucky, an if they feel generous for the holiday season and my birthday coming up next week, they will just send me all the parts to convert it...doubt that will happen though.

Be sure to sweet talk your favorite Weber CSR Nate ;)

FWIW< Weber lists different part numbers for the A/B and the D.

82575 Cookbox, Summit Gold A6/B6, '05
82574 Cookbox, Summit Gold D6, '05

Your right. I just glanced at the tag on the box and thought the '05 said D6. Guess my eyes are getting bad. Here's a pic.

UPDATE: Weber is sending me the correct fire box so I don't have to make some sort of a block off plate. They are also sending a new lid under warranty. It will basically be a new grill when I'm done.

Yeah they do make the part for this Summit. It was me who was left high and dry by Weber with my Summit 450 even though it was/is under warranty. Gotta wonder what good a warranty is if the company won't even make the part to stand behind the product!

Awesome!

I thought you stated elsewhere they no longer made these parts.

That was probably someone else that mentioned that based on the Summit model you have. If you have the model mentioned above by Lmichaels, then that is likely the case.

Received this today. New lid and they sent the correct fire box too. Hopefully I can get another 10-11 years out of this. I have to say, the Genesis is much better quality than the Summit. Of course I'm talking about the fire box.
