I am afraid you are going to have to be more specific with why you consider it a disaster as it looks ok to me from the pictures.

Firebox and SIde panels Prepped. Basically stripped to bare metal with grinder and Sander. Found out you have to basically remove most of the paint for it to look decent..

That is not a disaster - Paying to much is just a learning curve. I think I posted a 13 bar + burner set for $50 on Amazon. It is hard to have a real disaster with an old Weber as there are currently parts and ways to fix almost everything I can think of on this forum. The only real shortage are the enamel drip pans for the 1000-5000 deep box grills. But even then you can get a new painted sheet metal one from eBay that someone linked to. I had to fix mine with some JB Weld epoxy putty and high temp paint. If I ever use that grill I will line the tray with aluminum foil to protect it.

Didn't get a photo of the hood while i was taking it apart and painting the sides but, the clean up with Scraping with the razor blades inside and the using steel wool on the inside and outside of the grill cover with simple green worked great.. Cleaned up beautifully.. Ty guys for your tips. Also, if you notice, The sides the are a different shade.. I bought 2 identical cans of rustoleum.. 1 is definitely grayer than the other.. I Might keep the sides of the hood gray but im not sure.. What do you think.. ?

Your right Joe.. Im more pissed that i know better and shouldn't have paid the money but i wanted one of these old ones and the rest is history. The enamel drip pan is mint.. That makes me feel better now.. Lol.

Partially going together. Test fit.. Still have more painting and bolts/ Screws to install but you get the idea. All Stainless FlavorBars RCPlaner. New wheels coming too. Weber Grill emblem will be painted shortly. Just didnt take it off yet

yeah no matter what you paid in the end youll have a grill that lasts 20 years, the real obstacles are frame rust (which there was none) You can make it new and then itll be worth it

Deep box "thousand" grills are getting rare here in Pennsylvania. I'd go to a three digit number for one with a solid frame if I were looking. Thankfully, I'm not but like my 1995 Wrangler (the kind with square headlights) sometimes the older models become rare and then you get supply and demand. Long winded way of saying don't feel too bad, and once you get that grill done you will be thrilled. Deep box is the best, and deep box with slat models again are almost all gone around here.

Have fun!

Looks like a fairly solid unit and certainly a viable candidate for restore. Paying too much I suppose depends on the person, but don’t beat yourself up too much. Go price a new one and feel better!

Good point Bobby.. These are very well made grills and for the money I paid, and if it lasts 20 or so years , I guess I'm doing ok.

I would hope you picked up that grill for under $50,
of got really lucky and scored it for free.
HOWEVER..... even if you paid as much as $300 (which I highly doubt)
you will still come out better in the end than if you
went down to the local box store and picked up the
lastest shiny, soon to be rust bucket, that they are
selling right now.

Didn't realize these deep box grills were becoming that rare.. I paid 150 so I guess I'm doing alright..

About 150 dave.. guy threw in a bunch of other stuff too. New regulator. Extra manifold and a few other things

I think grill prices are regional. When I was shopping for a SS Performer, the selection in my area was slim and they all seemed more expensive than what I was finding in other areas. (I use searchworldmarketplace.com to check the whole country). Even my completely restored overpriced Performer is still going to be cheaper than a new Performer. How many people buy a new Performer every day? No reason to feel bad about paying a couple of bucks extra because you found a local grill used.

Are the deep box grills better than the ones with just the 1 row of flavor bars? I have another webber that isn't a deep box which works great. Just don't know if there will be a cooking difference between the 2

I don't see anywhere you mention your intentions with this grill. I am guessing since you bought RC Planer stuff this is a keeper. If so you will have a great grill at less than 1/2 the price of a new one that will outlast a new one.
If it was a flipper then yes you probably will not make money on it, but still could have, by buying less expensive components, as most buyers would not know 7MM SS from 9MM SS grates.
