My first score of the new season

For some reason there are quite a few of these Genesis Gold grills for sale on Facebook near me, asking anywhere from $50 to $500. What I have noticed though is that they all have the small aluminum drip tray instead of the black porcelain coated one that seemed to come on Weber grills from that era. I'm kind of thinking that's the way they came from the factory. Did anyone buy one these grills new? The one that came on my grill looks kind of old and beat up which adds to my theory. I've got a new one in my parts so I will be replacing it.View attachment 109412
I didn’t buy one new, but the 4 I’ve had my hands on all had that same aluminum pan.

Those grates look grate. Sorry I had to. Did you soak, scrape and wire wheel them? Or what process did you use?

These weren't terrible to begin with so I didn't power wash them first like I usually do. It was mostly various sized wire wheels in my drill. I did lightly polish them with fine sandpaper to shine them up a little more. I'm going to run them through the dishwasher before I use them.

I'm just not too sure about the inside of the lid. I would like for it to be clean and shiny, but something tells me it's not going to be no matter what I do to it. This is why I prefer the porcelain coated lids, they always come perfectly clean with some elbow grease.

Do you have a spare lid to swap it with, or are you going original purist for this one?
The outside of the lid is pretty much perfect so there really isn't any reason to switch it out. The inside liner is in good shape, just dirty. If anyone knows how to get those clean again I'm listening. I've just never dealt with a stainless steel lid before.

If you don’t mind the appearance of the swirls, a wire wheel should do the trick. I’ve yet to do it on one. But it’s really the same theory as cleaning the cookbox.

I cleaned my Gold lid with the members mark grill cleaner and a scrub daddy. Didn’t take a pic, but it wasn’t close to what I was hoping for once all the gunk was gone.

I'm thinking that would bother me. I might try power washing it when the weather gets a little nicer. I don't think that will hurt anything. I'm also afraid to use any chemicals on it because the paint on the end caps is in such good shape that I'm afraid it would damage it unless I took the end caps off first.
