Peter,
I am a KCBS CBJ and Table Captain from Riverside. I will be at Long Beach on Saturday judging (or table captain). I judged there last year and it was a blast.
Here are a few pointers...
Be On TIME! I think our check in is at 10. I always arrive early. You never know about traffic, parking.
Bring your KCBS book. Have the KCBS rep sign it when you check in.
Don't eat too much before you arrive. I have a little fruit or something before I leave the house. You WILL get very full even taking one bite. Also, by the end of judging I don't want to see meat for a few meals. Dinner always consists of salad!
At The Queen Mary, parking is a little weird. Last year, the parking attendants were clueless and I had to move my car after they told me it was okay to park in the lot. You'll want to park across the street from the main attendee parking (unless they have changed it).
Pay attention to your fellow judges. Ask questions...everyone is really friendly and the KCBS reps are the best around. Your table captain will help as well. You will meet some great folks and as you judge more, you will build relationships with the other judges.
After (not before), talk to the teams to see how much work they put into their turn ins. I was privileged to cook with an amazing team last year. You'll want to do this if you want to be a master judge.
This is a great event, well organized, heavily attended. Arlie is a good promoter.
Basically, you arrive, get assigned a table (AKA the Southwest Shuffle), get some instruction, eat some amazing BBQ, look at the ocean and have a few laughs along the way. Not a bad way to spend a Saturday.
If you'd like, I can give you my contact information and give you the run down before the contest. Just PM me.
I look forward to seeing you there...
