Ending first:

There's nothing more American than bacon on the grill, right?

So I did a little hiking today - man I am out of shape! Even after doing P90x again for the last >5 weeks..... this really gets me.

Here's the pup romping through some flowers: https://goo.gl/photos/rmG6pSrEPVW8RHzr9

A view from as high as I got (within 200' of the top): https://goo.gl/photos/1zANg73wqHrmYzn18

Her coming down a steep trail with 4 bandaged paws (oops - yes, I know, and yes I'll do better next time): https://goo.gl/photos/44pJns4n6veVvaoB6

Yesterday's hike - video from Wolverine Cirque. I haven't hiked for a little over 5 weeks, been doing p90x pretty regularly:

This is what we were going for - I haven't hit the top since the year before last. I took Roxy up there about a year ago (several months after I got her) a couple times - the first time the snow field was too deep, the 2nd time we lost the trail in the snow but were almost there when we got chased out by a lightning storm.

I tried carrying her a little ways down...and at 78 pounds the last I checked, I'm glad she was able to make it down slowly. I carried her where it was steepest (the whole thing is steeper than most would expect).

Not sure what I'll do - maybe she's just not cut out to be my big hiking buddy- I have to slow my runs down for her too...and I'm already out of shape.

I was really happy to make it down, now I'm nursing her (bag balm on the pads, bacon & dog food in the belly)

Excellent bacon cook.. Some great photos, I'm sure there's something you can do to toughen up her paws, I know she'll not want to stay home for future hikes

Bacon is the best side dish.

Years ago I did a full round of p90x and then tried to go on a bike ride like I did a few years prior. I got destroyed. I found P90x is very poor at providing a cardiac base, outside of jumping in your house for 45 minutes. Cranking out miles on the stationary bike while reading is what I like for a cardiac workout.

Sorry to hear about the pup. Is 78 pounds her ideal weight? You might check with your vet to see if there is anything that would help her. Burgers look great though.

Great looking burgers and love you mountains. Glad the pup is getting better she sure is a cutie.

The vet told me she was overweight. I told the vet that SHE was overweight (I didn't but wanted to).

Chuck, there are some shoes they have for dogs I've looked at but never bought (soon as she heals we'll go get some)... my lab was good for 6-9 miles, but rocky stuff is always extra hard. She hadn't gone anywhere either for the >5 weeks..........

Clint as long as everything else is OK health wise having her stay outside on hard ground most of the time her paws will naturally toughen. And you will rarely have to clip her nails. Dogs that live indoors or kenneled in a small area rarely develop the paws needed to do that sharp edge rock.

I took the little girl out again tonight----and a few days ago. She was slow coming down......I told her she was getting voted off the island....then she came down & I saw her paws were tearing again (no tears a few days ago, same hike). I wrapped her paws with some self-adhering ace-bandage-type stuff......(my step brother just told me was called Coban) on her paws & she was a tank again!
