Thanks, everyone, for answering my questions in my other newbie questions thread, as I started looking at options.

Well, I got one! The Snap on Genesis 1000 that I posted in that thread. He was asking for $150 firm, looking for a Snap on/Weber fan. I let it stay on CL for about 2 weeks before I contacted him. He accepted $75 and I brought it home.

Sorry, no pics at the moment, but I will add them later..

Upon closer inspection, it appears to be in good shape. The FB's need to be replaced, but the burners look good and fired right up, hitting over 500 in several minutes. The grates are the porcelain coated steel and are in pretty good shape after some high heat and brushing. No need to replace them yet. Paint is ok, could use a touchup on the lid sides and firebox. Is it possible to touch those up without a complete tear down? Reading stories of broken bolts and drilled out screws has me worried about trying to break it all the way down. Also appears to be a bit of white overspray on the porcelain lid and control panel. 0000 SW and Simply Green should remove that, correct?

The wood is in pretty good shape, but the surfaces could use some sanding and refinishing. What color/product/process do you recommend to bring those slats and handle back and help protect them for the future?

Also, as I was inspecting the burners, I noticed that the middle burner has flames on both sides, but looking at videos online of the newer burners, it appears that those middle burners only have the flame on top. Did someone install the wrong burners as the hardware looks newer than most everything else in the firebox. Is there a preference?

And finally, the age. I can't find a serial number anywhere on it. Is there a way to date it without the serial number, besides a broad mid to late nineties?

Thank you again for your thoughts and collective knowledge!!

Congrats. For the end caps, remove the two clevis pins on the back and take the hood off the grill. Grab some newspaper and some painters tape and mask off the porcelain lid. There's probably going to be a little gap between the endcaps and the porcelain that you can slide the newspaper into. Mask the handle off also. Be sure that you only paint the outside of the end caps, not the insides.

WRT the burners, IIRC, the early middle tubes did have the holes/flames on both sides. That was changed somewhere along the way.

For the age, pull the burner knobs, undo the two screws on the right and pull the control panel up. Look for a white label that would have the serial and model number. If you can't find it, or if you can't read it, then check the endcaps to see if a date was included in the casting. Lastly, some manifolds have dates or serial numbers on them, but I can't remember which models did that.

Bill, look under the control panel plate that's where the serial # should be. As far as the sides of the lid goes if the just needs a respray newspaper will fit between the porcelain lid and the side panel just mask the porcelain with newspaper and have at it.

I've never seen a 1000 with a center burner with holes on both sides and those burners are pretty much model specific unless they might be aftermarket ones.

The age will be almost impossible to determine without the serial #

If it is a Silver B, then I find most of the SN tags on the right end of the control panel between the control panel and the right gray end cap. You have to remove the end cap to see it.

I think you got a great deal on that Special Edition lid.

Actually, I have THREE separate 1000s with those type of middle burners. Those are probably the original burners. I've seen several sets of Genesis 1000 models with that type of middle burner. They require a different crossover tube, too.

My genesis is a 1999 which I bought new and it has the original burners and I just looked to be sure and it's a single row straight up burner maybe toward the end of the 0000 series they changed them. I can't remember if the other three 1000s I rehabbed were different. I also checked my spares and I do have spare set of burners for a 1000 and it does have two rows on the center burner.

Thanks, People, Y'all are the best!

Bruce, thanks! Deep down, everyone wants to hear that they made a good buy! Also, what is the difference between the Genesis 1000 and the Silver B? Simply the age? Hmmm.. I need to find that SN! I looked under the control panel last night, but didn't remove it.

Good to know about the burners. Maybe they are original. They look fine and work, so I won't replace them quite yet.

On the paint.....I see most recommend the ultra HH for these grills, with the UHH being a glossy finish. I also read that the lid sides are textured and flat or matte looks better, and then use UHH glossy on the frame. Is this the way most of you are doing it? Still easy without a full breakdown to the frame?

And for the wood, I picked up a small can of Minwax Polyshades in pecan. Will this work? I'm not looking for a full-on poly finish, but something a bit more weather resistant than just a stain. Also, will pecan color be close to the original? I know absolutely nothing about wood stains.

thanks again!!

Biggest difference is that the 1000 has two rows of flavorizer bars and deeper cookbox than than the Silver B. That and it has a nicer "retro" look.

And the Silver B's will have the thermoset tables instead of the wood or durawood slats. Along with what dave said, that is basically the only difference.
