Weber was able to command a higher price because their products stood out as clearly better built and better cookers. First the kettle compared to tinny "brazier" competitors and then with the original Genesis that was light years ahead of the crude square box, lava rock offerings most other gas grill makers were making at the time. Now, I think it is easier for smaller, nimbler companies to flood the big box stores with some halfway decent grills at great prices, while Weber has steadily gone the route of using thinner materials but still priced higher. I personally would still take a Weber, but it is no longer as clear of a choice.
