MM question

Got a question about the MM. I've read posts about people using K to light lump using the MM. Has anyone ever used leftover lump to light K? I'm doing some PP(Phil-b-q) this weekend, and have some leftover lump from last weekends BBs. What do y'all think? Will it work? Thanks for any info.

Yes. If the lump is intact enough to light well enough it will light K just fine. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

Exactly. I generally find that the lump (left over) is too small and a lot of it falls through the chimney. I'd throw the left over lump in with the K in the charcoal bowl and use fresh K in the chimney.

The logic behind using Briq's to light lump for me boils down to consistency and easier chimney loading.

Generally I know how many briq's I'm going to need depending on the outside whether.... but lump can be less consistent and you are stuck "eye-balling" the chimney.

I find the left over lump works just fine where it is.... in the charcoal bowl!!

To add to Scotter's point, it is a lot easier to light briquettes than lump. I think that ease of use is the major factor in using briquettes to light lump with the MM.

Gentlemen
I must respectfully disagree. I think it is easier to light some lump in the chimney than briquets. I think they catch fire faster being all wood and so the fire spreads faster. Of course, if your left over lump pieces are so small that they fall through the chimney they belong in the bowl. I lit a half chimney of lump last night and I would estimate that it was ready to be dumped in half the time of briquets. Lit lump over unlit briquets has worked fine for me when I've used that method. However, what difference does it make as long as you are smoking. Right?

I like using lump for everything, but the burn times aren't as rock solid as I've found with briq's. Maybe I'll try mixing them next time, might get the best of both worlds.
