Melted my Maverick transmitter

Last week during a cook my Maverick transmitter leaned against my WSM and melted. The grate probe is toast but the meat probe still works. Maverick said they can sell me a new transmitter for $20 and a probe for $12. I think I can buy a whole new set for $40. Should I cut my losses and just order a new set? I am getting ready to install a Tel-tru in the lid so next time I have a backup in case something like this happens again. One note for people with the Maverick is that it only took a minute with the WSM at 300 degrees to cook my transmitter. I was in the process of checking my new wind break and didn't even make it back inside before it died.

Mark,

Not to suggest any one type of remote therm but now is probably a good time to look around. I use a Nu-Temp-701 which receives up to 3 transmitters and there are others out there as well.

Good Luck,

The little wire stand/hanger that came with the Maverick seemed a little close for me when hung on the WSM. I was afraid the transmitter might melt if I messed up and got my grill temp too high. That and the fact that the little hanger lets the transmitter fall over to the point that you have to bend over and look up to read the temp caused me to fashion one out of a coat hanger which holds the transmitter away from the WSM and situates it so that it can be read without bending over so far.

That sufficed, but wasn't really stabile, so I'm currently using a Weber accessory hanger, and hoping that the heat won't get to be too much for the distance (not much) that it holds the transmitter off from the WSM.

Maverick would do us all a big favor if they would make their little wire stand so that the transmitter would be further away from the WSM and at the same time, face so that you can read it.

FWIW--Tom

I hang mine on the top of a patio chair that I pull next to the WSM. Seems to work well but would be nicer if the wires were a little longer.

So what others are out there that have simlar features of the Mav?

My Polder thermometers have taken a beating and still keep working. Half of them have somewhat melted bases as I tend to just set it on top of the WSM dome while cooking. All have been dropped several times, probe wires are kinked, and half are missing the plastic cover.

Just another perspective that has been more successful with digital equipment

I am with Dale. I like the simple Polder. Their cheap and take a beating. Most of my have lost their battery and face covers and keep ticking. They get abused at clean up time at competitions.
