Marble? Or Granite? Will it work outside and cutting it... ???

If it’s good enough for Deloitte and Touche, I think it’s good enough for me.
Honestly, I think that makes good sense from a design standpoint.
 
I got a rough estimate of $250 to cut the marble from one place. I guess that's their way of saying "we don't really want to do this" ...

From the contractors point of view, it’s sometimes difficult dealing with someone who can’t visualize- and I’m not saying that’s you.

If you have templates in hand and say this is exactly what you want it might go smoother.

Or not.

But cardboard templates are easily transported and there must be more than one stonecutter in your area.

And Home Depot rents some pretty heavy duty tile saws if you think you could do it yourself.
 
Yep, I used to bid projects that really looked like they would be miserable crazy high and still I’d have people say “Well, it was Great Aunt so and so’s I think we should do it.” That worked pretty well until it didn’t on a couple of jobs, it made some money but, the projects really were demanding! A couple turned out much less frustrating than originally expected and, the results did make customers happy!
 
When I was younger and had a family to provide for, I would build cabinetry on the side.

But I only worked for businesses.

Those people generally knew exactly what they wanted, paid when the job was done, and if they liked the work there would be referrals.

Home owners- “why so much? I can get that for half the price at Home Depot”…ugh.

I really don’t know- it depends on the region/ area, overhead and labor rate of the shop owner.

My best advice is know exactly what you want.

Any unknown adds “cover your *** money” from whoever is giving the price.

If someone sees exactly what they need to do they will be more willing to give you a good price- in my opinion.

And if you can, get more quotes- generally one guy is way more, one guy is way less, so pick the middle price if it’s something you feel comfortable paying.

I’d just think…”asked and answered”. And send them to a crappy chain,jeweler to have it put in a junky stock mass produced mounting that was “modified” to fit. That was usually getting ont that was too big and just stuffing the stone in and hacking the thing together.
One must acknowledge that the artist is worth his hire!
 
I suppose if this was going into some furniture in my living room. I used the words "rustic" and commented it didn't need any edge treatment just cut to size. I'm not slamming costs of artisans, it just seems high.
 
I would try to find someone else to at least give you a quote. In my neck of the woods these guys are jammed they don't want to screw around with small jobs why should they? If it was me I would not buy another cheap saw use a good circular saw if you have one buy that blade on Amazon which is 13 bucks in the video spray with water and have at it your out 13 bucks if it does not work. I have cut stone before crab orchard its a ton of dust make sure you do it outside and wear eye protection. Marble is extremely soft a lot softer than granite.

the saw I might buy is this one for $20. Looks double insulated and is only a few minutes away.

I'd rather not risk mine. I've had it a long time and was a gift from my Dad.
