Making a memorable BBQ Event

We're having a big family reunion this summer and I want to do something memorable meal wise. Now making ribs or pulled pork provides a great meal but that is something that people frequently have so may not be memorable in that case. I'm looking for something where even the process will be memorable. Right now I am leaning towards doing a full pig (as mentioned in another note).

Anyone have other ideas for something that fits the bill of being memorable? I'll be doing this at a rented cottage so another criteria may be that it needs a fairly easy set up. Also don't want to do something that has a high failure rate.

While a hog is pretty memorable, it may be a bit tougher to get set up not knowing what is at the location you will be cooking at. I did a Greek night for my family w/ lamb, chicken souvlaki, salads and pita's etc. All on the 18.5 and performer it worked out quite well. A few briskets help out in amount of food (if its a big group) too... What do they usually like to eat (other than ribs and pp)?

I would stick to what you do best...Get plenty of drinks. Maybe hire a clown and magician for the kids. The face painting lady for the kids and adults.

We don't get together as a whole family all that often, but when we do,guess who's pulled pork they want? It's not so much about the food, but the memories of the good times!

Hey, Robert... I'm with Tony. Stick with what you do best and Keep It Simple.

Does your family really have backyard Q (not restaurant :( Q) "frequently"?

Alright, ever heard of corn hole? There ain't nothing more fun than corn hole to play when your out with a bunch of people and anyone can learn to play fast. I carry the corn hole set I built to every thing I go to like this. Those little ring games on a string are fun too. Just hang a big washer from a tree limb and have a hook on the tree trunk that you try to ring. Tree needs to be pretty skinny though so it can swing past it. I know these are Southern staples at tailgates around where I am, 100 fraternity guys have fun doing it with a few beers so I bet it would entertain a big family good too. It's just good wholesome fun really.

As far as food goes though if you think you can pull it off a whole hog roast would be pretty memorable if your family is pig into porcine goodness. Whole cinder block pits seem pretty easy to setup and cook on, but that leaves the Weber's out of it so maybe not! Could use them for everything else though!

Wheres the cottage? I am only 45 mins from Lake Huron if you are coming this way, and I have a pig roaster you could rent. If it is in Muskoka, sorry your to far away.

Stick to ribs & pulled pork if you have a proven method.

I would make it more memorable with some awesome apps. ABT's, Moinks, smoked shrimp come to mind. Bacon covered anything should do the trick. My family usually fills up on apps and can hardly eat a serving of the real dinner once it's served.
