Lump in Detroit?

Anyone know of any good deals on decent lump in the Detoit area? My fav. market just stopped carrying it for the winter (Full Circle brand - good stuff).
Thanks,
Don

Don,

If you have a Gordon Food Service near you they carry their own brand of lump charcoal which is made by Royal Oak and distributed with the GFS name, or if you have access to Restaurant Depot, they carry Royal Oak Lump all year long.

Also, Soulliere's & Sons on Woodward in Royal Oak I believe, carry lump charcoal.

Thanks Bruce...I will check out them all. I just got some BGE lump at the nearby BBQ store but it was expensive ($17.99/20lb). I'm right down the road from Soulliere's (I'm a Ferndalien).

Some True Value Hardware stores also sell a pretty good lump at a good price. I'm with Bruce on going to GFS, but if you have a True Value closer than a GFS, it's just as good as R.O. I think they call it Natural Lump or something like that.

Thanks Bruce and Jerry, I was not familiar with GFS, but there is a store not too far away. I went today since I was over that way and scored 2 bags of lump at a much more reasonable price ($10.99/20lb)...being a total lump convert I really needed a new supply. I'll try it soon.

I thought your title was refering to the odd, rather useless assembly of men in uniform that pretend to play football in that city.

Tom,
I have friends who live in Windsor. I've also wanted to try Maple Leaf but didn't know where to get it (or tell them where to get it). Is it always at Canadian Tire? Where is one in relation to the Ambassador Bridge? Most important, is it as good enough to have someone go out of their way for?

My Canadian Tire doesn't carry ML, nor is it in their online catalog.

These guys do carry it: Barbeques Galore Canada. Is it worth the drive? Well, that's subjective, but hell ya IMO. Naked Whiz Maple Leaf Lump review. If you're gonna go for it, I'd call ahead and place an order for pick up. The store I go to in Calgary is often out of stock.

Edit:

They are charging $20/bag for it this year, I used to get it from Rona for $13/bag but the one I go to stopped carrying it. Some Home Hardware stores might carry it as well.

At $20/bag I use cheaper briquettes for everyday MM cooks and save the ML for special cooks, grilling and side and back bacon.

2nd Edit: The review talks about quality concerns. I was speaking to someone at Barbeques Galore back in the summer about ML. I was told they stoppped carrying it for a while because of it. There were 'production issues' he said, you could get a bag with 4 giant lumps in it or a bag of fines or anywhere in between, but the issues had been resolved and the store was carrying the brand again.

You mean the "Li-downs"??? That's OK Tom, the only professional football team I'm really a fan of is Ohio State - GO Buckeyes!

Don,

Glad to find another Buckeye on here. I also lived in Detroit for a while as a Buckeye fan. Unfortunately, it was during the John Cooper years. Although the Buckeyes are having their troubles this year, it still makes me very happy to see how bad Michigan is this year.

GO BUCKS!!

Bob

Robert,
I grew up in Columbus and we always had season tickets....Archie Griffin played high school ball down the street from me...my most favorite things in football are watching OSU win and U.M. lose...hopefully in the same game
