Lump Charcoal in North Atlanta Area

I lived in Oklahoma for a few years and got spoiled buying Ozark Oak for $4.49 a 10lb bag. Does anyone know my best options here in North Atlanta?

Phil

Got a buddy over there that cooks on his Kamado Joe like 5 nights a week. What particular suburb are you in. He will give me some directions and I'll gladly pass them along.

My smoking buddy suggests here:

American Backyard Mall of Georgia

1955 Mall of Georgia Boulevard
Buford, GA 30519-6545
(770) 325-0500

Let me know if they have what you need!

Phil,

I was wanting to switch to lump but can't find a consistent supplier at a good price in our area. I have stuck with blue bag K for this reason.

HD had a decent price on some lump called "True Cue". DO NOT BUY, you get a couple decent pieces and the rest is all tiny.

Lowe's has the cowboy lump, but I haven't been by to check the price.

I am down on the east side near us78/i285.

Phil,

S&S Ace Hardware in Buford is listed as a authorized dealer in "Wicked Good Charcoal" products. Wicked Good Charcoal makes both lump and brick style charcoal products, but I have not idea what this particular location carries. Address is:

4300 Buford Drive (Highway 20)
Buford, GA 30518
(770) 932-1458

I've not used their product, but plan on swinging by the dealer in Covington and picking up a few bags. It gets good reviews (and is a recommended product) on the Naked Whiz charcoal database page (look under "WGC" brand). From what I've read in several forums it is a good product if you can get it locally.

Here is the Wicked Good Charcoal dealer web page if anybody else is looking for their products:

Josh, your description of TruQue sounds sort of like what I ended up with in a couple bags of Frontier from Sam's club. Both are from Mexico, so I wonder if that has anything to do with it. Don't even THINK about buying Cowboy lump, though. That's gotta be the fastest burning stuff there is.

Check ya'll's Walmarts for Royal Oak lump. For the money, it's pretty hard to beat.

Josh,

I've not been impressed with Cowboy. It's a "sparker" for one thing.

David,

Thanks, that's my favorite hardware store. I bought a bag of Frontier the other day, but haven't tried it yet. I heard ACE was not going to carry it anymore anyway. I'll check out the Wicked Good.

David R,

Yep, that's been my experience with Cowboy as well. I'll look for Royal Oak. The price seems right.

Thanks all

I've only used cowboy for grilling and it definitely sparked a good bit in the chimney. I will check out royal, I have two aces near me.

On the royal, how is the dust or small piece?

From what I've read and heard Wicked good Lump/Charcoal is very good.
Make sure to check Walmart for the red bag Royal oak and if you have a Menard's hardware store by you check there for the green bag royal oak, either one is hard to beat for the money at right around $5 a bag.

How is the consistency of sizes on Royal Oak & Wicked Good ?

I don't want to have to deal with all the tiny pieces falling through the grate. I guess I could just use two grates crossed.

Walmart has Royal Oak pretty cheap. It's the only lump I buy around here.

Yeah, you can use a couple of grates crossed, but I've never messed with it. Generally, I don't use lump on the wsm unless I'm cooking poultry and want high heat, but I like to grill with it. I don't notice all the flavor differences that a lot of folks talk about, but I sure like how leftover lump holds together.

I don't think you'll mind the R.O. from Walmart. I just pick out bags that look less handled, and I might even turn it on end and do a quick comparison with a couple of others. Of course, everybody raves about Wicked. However, the guys at the Naked Whiz site or whatever they call it give RO pretty good reviews, especially the bags that say "Made in the USA", and that's what I bought last time from Walmart.

Dave, you mentioned you "never messed with" two crossed grates. One of the mods for the WSM shows a Smokey Joe grate wired to the charcoal ring. Simple and once done, there's really nothing to "mess" with. Put the ring in with grates crossed for lump and with the grates lined up for briquets (too much ash for the smaller holes).

Rich, I'd think it would be worth it to just get another charcoal grate so you wouldn't risk the light SJ cooking grate warping. Regardless, on the rare occasion that I use lump, I just lay down one layer of briquettes first.

Actually, Dave, the SJ grate I have is the same gauge as the charcoal grate for the WSM (2010 model). Or perhaps I just assumed this Weber grate was a Smokey Joe -- I just bought a Weber part number, no grill named. But anyway, it just fits nicely inside the 18.5 charcoal ring.

Rich

Rich, I believe you have a charcoal grate for a 18.5" kettle if I'm not mistaken. I'll try to remember to pick one up next time I'm in Lowes.

Yeah, I'd guess that you're right, Dave. I did get it at Lowe's.
