Looks like mods again on new WSM 22

Well after I modded my WSM last yr and then sold it due to families lack of response on smoked foods.......I`m getting another one...LOL

I guess the absence of ribs, chicken and pulled pork the last 6 mths has made them all realize that they did like the smoked foods coming off it after all. Luckily I didn't lose much at all on the last ones sale so no huge loss. Heading to HD to get some wheels, stainless washers, flat stock for handles, and lamp tube for grommet mod. Still have a stock pile of ubolts for the grates on my clearance buy last time. Looking forward to making some bacon and some ribs in the next few weeks again. Luckily I have close to 450 lbs of charcoal stockpiled...:) Just in time for turkey sale season...hahah

Are you going to mod exactly like the old one? If I was to do it again, I would likely change a thing or two, but certainly retain the same functions, maybe just a tad improved.............................d

I'm glad they came around! What was the reason your family didn't like your cooking? Was it too much smoke? If so add less smoke wood. Was it not cooked long enough (ribs fall off the bone). If so cook the ribs 'till they fall off the bone. Etc,etc. Make your family happy! They'll ask you to cook more often!

David..Im going to do it exactly the same as last time but drop the extra grate and 18" WSM fire ring for smaller smokes. The handles, wheels and other mods made using it a bit easier.

Dwaine, I dont like heavy smoke flavor so never used a bunch anyways. I stuck with apple and cherry and peach woods. They are used to the crock pot style boil your pork down until it dissolves kind of BBQ and ribs. They were not real fond of the bark on the shoulders mixed all in and the same with the ribs a bit..Seems like now that they have gone back to eating it the other way they liked mine better. They now complain that the restaurants ribs are too dry and small and the BBQ doesn't have the same flavor the wanted.. I guess it just took them to see what they were missing to realize what they really liked....LOL I did cook the ribs the last part in honey, AJ and brown sugar while in foil and then a bit out till they were fall off the bone or very close to it like they liked...I think my neighbors I used to throw stuff in for at the same time are just as pleased I`m getting another one. :)

Made the new handles today for the body and new smoker arrived yesterday via FEDEX. Thanks Amazon for sending a new one so fast. Going to mount these horizontal with new holes vs vertical using the rack holes this time. Should make it a little easier to lift with racks loaded.. They are taken back apart at the moment and getting shot with high temp black grill paint befre mounting them. Used the same paint to touch up the hole edges I drilled with step bit to mount them.

And pics of them installed. I was pleasantly surprised too see that the cover still slides over the WSM. Its a hair snug but no issues going past the handles once the elastic bottom goes over. Handle mod is one of the best ones to do. I have it modded the exact same way my other one was so it feels like old times again. Yes its in the house but come Tues night it spends the rest of its life outside after first cook/smoke.
Handles added, Cajun Bandit Door, probe port mod, lower grate mod, charcoal ring mod with extra grate and eye bolts for easier removal, washers on brackets to snug up racks and water pan and wheels added..

Welcome back to the fold, Mike ;)

Only issue I see with your mods is in the last picture in post # 6 - the lack of smoke issuing from the WSM... :wsm:

It will be in the next few days...Have some chicken to break it in, ribs later in week and then have some pork bellies in the fridge with 5 more days to go till I can smoke into bacon goodness...Its good to be back in the fold :)
I had fun modding this one already and the handle orientation switch was a good choice this time...

If I may ask, what stock metal did you use for your handles?
Where did you procure it?
They look very nice!!
Thanks.

Its 3/4" aluminum flat stock from Lowes. It fits the handles really snug so you have to file it down just a tad at upper edges so lower part of the handles snaps onto them snugly. Not hard to do. I did the ones on my other smoker bending it by hand. This time I used at vise and it went a little quicker. I ordered the extra plastic handles from Ebay this time to cover the brackets and used stainless screws and washers to mount them.

Aluminum was $4.38

Screws/nuts and washers were a couple dollars....I also used small fiber washers in between the handle and smoker wall. They are the 1/4-20 x 5/8" ones used on the smoker. Nuts are 1/4-20 and then flat washers.

Handles were Weber part # 80671 for 12.50 shipped a pair.

These are the measurements to bend the metal to for them to fit in handle and also allow cover to slip on..The measurements are outside edge to outside edge. You need to drill a hole in center of handle metal for screw and 2 on the legs to bolt to smoker. I filed the edges of the mounting area so they were rounded off for better look. I then painted with high temp grill paint for best look. The aluminum stock will hold up to the weight of the smoker and no worries about rust. I had them on my older smoker and lifted it with 6 shoulders in it with no issues....

Sorry for the crude drawing but gives you an idea and cant make it larger for some reason. I did it real quick in paint so issues...LOL

You can see the groove area I said needs to filed in this pic of the handles I did for old smoker to get an idea of what I`m talking about
