Looking for a poultry rub or general purpose rub online...

I'm looking to order an over the counter poultry rub or all around general purpose rub that everyone can pretty much agree on that it is good one... Something is telling me that my girlfriend doesn't like the rub recipe I have :( I'm open to all opinions...

As a general rule, I make my own but Lawry's seasoned salt is pretty good. I also like Chef Merito's chicken seasoning but that does have msg in it and some don't care for that. Chef Merito also has an excellent carne asada seasoning mix.

OTC?
You can buy Weber's Kickin Chickin at most stores. Another is McCormick's Montreal Chicken.

i'm one of those that thinks salt and pepper is all thats needed. but I do like to add butter and rosemary under the skin. I don't like anything that overwhelms the chicken or whatever i'm cooking.

I use all of the above plus some. Lemon pepper, and all of the Mrs. Dash seasonings to name a few more. We eat a lot of chicken so I try to use a bunch of different rubs and cook them different ways too. Look into marinades too there are just as many marinades as there are rubs it seems.

I will say that last weekend I stopped at Wally World and picked up a small shaker of Tony Chachere's Cajun seasoning and tried it on some wings... Well, needless to say, I'm glad that it was a small batch because I had tried them and then had her try them and then threw the rest away, along with the seasoning... Way too salty for my taste... I was really surprised because I know that a lot of people use this stuff... At least I tried it I guess...

Lawry's season salt is very salty to me. Listen to Jim and the other guys suggestions. webers kickin chicken is very good. So is Penzeys Northwoods seasoning and I like to use Plowboys Yardbird seasoning on my beer can chickens.

21 seasoning salute from Trader Joes is another low sodium seasoning with good flavor. I'm also hooked on Kickin Chicken. Had some tonight on my grilled wings. Very good.

I'll third (or fourth, fifth) Weber's Kickin' Chicken. I've also been known to just do salt, pepper, onion and garlic powders on chicken. Plus, whatever fresh herbs we have under the skin or in the cavity if doing a whole bird. That way,you can control the seasoning.

I just thought of another one I like. Trader Joe's Smoke Seasoning. It's basically salt, pepper, garlic and paprika that you bring onto whatever you are cooking.

Wow... Cool... Thanks for all the responses... I'm gonna order a couple of them... I want to try the Penzey's and the Plowboy's Yardbird... Next time I go to Trader Joe's I'll pick that one up too... Thanks for all the responses... Regina, I agree with you on the Lawry's being too salty... I always try to avoid the salty ones but it's mostly trial and error... I just picked this one up after work this morning at Walmart.... I hope it's good because I waited in line at the register for about 10 minutes in the speedy checkout lane... I got this one because I saw brown sugar in the ingredients and I thought she might like it... I put it on some thighs for tonight (chicken thighs, not hers :p)...

Looks good Leo. I have not seen that one in particular. Let us know how it is.(LOL about the thighs..)

Ok... For those of you who have not tried the Weber Chicken N Rib Seasoning, I recommend giving it a try... We really enjoyed it tonight... My son actually had 3 thighs tonight... He never eats that much... I'm gonna have to try it on ribs next... I still will pickup the Penzey's and the Plowboy's.... I didn't post tonight's cook because we had to eat in a rush tonight... I did take a photo of the grill when first loaded but didn't bother to post it because I didn't have the end pic... :(

It was pretty good... Very mild, smooth and just a tiny tad sweet with no heat whatsoever... It's just different than every other rub I've tried...

I don't use it often but do have some in the pantry -- but it's the no-salt Tony Chachere's. Down here, we tend to like things a bit spicy so I hate something I have to use less of because of the salt.

Brian and I used to try all types of rubs and also make our own, the latter which we occasionally still do. But about three years ago, I received a sample of Mad Hunky General Purpose Rub from Rich, a guy on another forum. It was great and we really use it on just about everything. It really is that good. We use the one with salt as it's not overloaded with salt, though I did buy some without salt to try. The one with salt is $7 for 8 oz. and $11 for 16 oz. The unsalted is more pricey (salt is cheap and without it, the percentage of more pricey herbs go up). We really do use this on everything -- chicken, pork chops, pork roasts, turkey, ribs, steak, etc.

Check it out at http://www.madhunkymeats.com/opencart/index.php. He sells brines, too, some of which I tried from samples as well. All good.
