2009 coupon still worked as of last Friday at Wal-Mart self checkout.

interesting, wish I knew that before I went and bought my 42lbs of K yesterday.
I've been using the 2009 coupon at Walmart successfully until yesterday. Once I scanned everything and was about to pay at the self-checkout I heard one associate yell down to their super "Hey get down here quick - we've got one of those $6 charcoal coupons"
The supervisor ran over and told me that I couldn't use them - that I needed to buy some pork. We politely went at it for about 10 minutes - until she finally just said "sorry - you can't use it"
I must have hit this Walmart up too much since me using the coupon must have raised a red flag going through the self-checkout.

Pete - disregarding the expiration part (since their system still takes it, and secondly since that was never brought up during my conversation with the associate)
The coupon is badly worded with what is required : buy 13.5lb or larger Kingsford charcoal AND one (1) of the following participating brands: Ball Park Franks, Hidden Valley Ranch, Glad Product, KC Masterpiece, or Vlasic Pickles or Relish.
While the top says "save $6.00 on the Other White Meat" - the details do not specify that at all nor how much etc.
All the products listed are owned by the Clorox Sales Company - so that much makes sense.
Lastly - during my "disagreement" I was never harsh nor rude to the associate - I was raised with manners, it is possible to have a disagreement without being rude
But at the end of the day you are right about the expiration and that's why I didn't put up some sort of stink (even though that wasn't used to deny the sale).

This post will probably upset some of you, please don't take it personally. This type of behaviour is becoming a common occurrence and we need put an end to it.
If you knew that the coupon expired and used it anyway that is theft - fraudulent use is the polite term. It is the same as taking 6 dollars (or multiples of 6 dollars) out of the till. You can be jailed for it.
If it was poorly worded and you recognised that it was poorly worded then you understood the intent. You used it to your advantage, again this is theft and a reflection on your integrity. Prices are increased by stores to offset discretionary losses (a polite word for theft. If you receive the wrong change and it is to your advantage you smile say thanks and walk out the door justifying it to yourself. This is theft and again a reflection on your integrity. If it is to your disadvantage you create a disturbance and accuse the sales assistant of trying to rob you (theft?). Just a role reversal in reality, the sales assistant did not intentionally and with forethought and malice do this, when they are aware of what has happened they immediately make restitution (Did You?)
Now I am not trying to be moralistic but I was brought up in the old school where you treated others the way you wanted to be treated. My Father was a man of strong values, he said to me once, “A man is born with a bank account full of integrity, he can make withdrawals from it but never can he make deposits. When his account starts to diminish the withdrawals increase in size - do not bankrupt yourself”. He then let me think about it and develop my own values – a very wise man.
We can always find excuses and justify why we did the wrong thing or why we think that it was not wrong. Try finding an excuse and justify doing the right thing - its a lot easier.
Sorry for standing on a soapbox on this but we complain about the youth of today but where did they get their examples from.

I'm generally sympathetic to the views expressed by Phil, especially when it comes to expiration dates. But the world is not full of angels that always do the right thing, so it's incumbent on businesses to put good controls in place to protect their interests.
Simple question: Why is it that store computers accept expired coupons? Because expiration date is not included in the barcode information? Sounds like a glaring error to me and a really bad business practice.
This Kingsford coupon is a classic example of really poor business controls, both for the store and the manufacturer. If you produce a massively stupid coupon like this and have no way to validate it properly, you're going to get ripped off.
You can characterize the situation as "reaching into the till and taking $6". But it's almost as if the store and manufacturer are saying, "We're so sloppy about our business practices that we leave stacks of free money laying around the store. Please feel free to take advantage of us because we just don't give a hoot".
I guess there's responsibility on both sides of the equation...for us to act ethically, and for businesses to not act stupid.

As a guy in retail, I can tell you that sometimes the reason for NOT putting the expiration date encoded into the barcode is because they really don't mind if the coupon is continued to be used after the printed "expiration date". Ultimately, the coupon is meant to be beneficial to the company (hoping you will contine to shop at their store, buy additional stuff when you use their coupon, etc.), so who's to say what the right thing to do is in this situation. I guess it's up to the individual...

I'll second what Gary said. Admittedly it is one of their own coupons, but I have had Bed, Bath, Beyond clerks not only insist on using my expired coupons, but using one per item, totaling to several on a single purchase (although I read the coupon to say one per transaction).
RE: BB&B, I have even pointed out that certain brands like All Clad are excluded from the coupon, and they still insist on taking the coupon.

BB&B is very welcoming of multiple and expired coupons.
You can also buy an item w/o a coupon, and take the receipt back later with a coupon, and they will give you the 20% discount. I did that on an expensive coffee pot. Bought in Texas and got the coupon applied in Louisiana.
Now to try the Kingsford coupon.
