Kingsford Charcoal

I have used royal oak too! They have it at Menards and it is like 6 bucks a bag and I have to drive 10 miles. Royal oak is great charcoal, it does seem to take longer to get get goin but that dont bother me.

I just found out that royal oak makes kindle brand charcoal and others! It is prob. the same stuff! It is a dollar or two cheaper every day.

Dean, where are you? I don't know of Menard's or Kindle brand. Is the Kindle a lump charcoal. Does it say the same on the bag as Royal Oak (I think that is "100% wood charcoal")?

Dean,

I'm glad you found a good store brand you like. I've tried Meijer brand briquetes once. They were terrible; smelled burnt and like burning coal. Not charcoal, but like coal. I threw the bag away.

But Royal Oak is my favorite- especially the lump. They have a Sav-A-Lot where my in-laws live, so I may try that.

I live in Michigan! BRRR right now. We are waiting for it to warm up here still! Menards is just like a home depot or a lowes. The only difference is menards concentates on the lower end of things.Matt, I have also tried Meijer brand charcoal.. The worst ever! Too many broken and half pieces out of the bag! Bad tasting too! Kindle is just regular briquetts NOT lump! I searched the web and found out that royal oak makes kindle and some other store brands! I am not a fan of the newest version of kingford. The pieces are smaller and therefore fall thru my grates in my wsm! They do light up quicker thou but are we really worried about 5 or 10 minutes for an over night cook?

I made a twenty mile trip (one way) Sunday to take HD up on their "Black Friday" charcoal offer. They didn't a have single bag. So, as not to tie up a checkout line, I went to the customer service desk to inquire. I was the only customer there and the three employees had no problem concentrating on each other until I gave up and walked off. The lady at the checkout said they had very little of the K to begin with and that they don't do rainchecks on that type of sale item. HD is not endearing me as a customer.

tom, you need to be a bit more aggressive. demand service. i do. no help, i just start yelling. its amazing what happens, service ! i didn't waste my time going there, hd, lowes, etc. just to be ignored. i chewed out a gal at the customer serv desk a while back as i couldn't find any help. i did it loudly and to the point. don't do it shouting wildly and mad, just loud so all can hear clearly.

. Ah, well.

Say, how about adding your location (at least "Michigan" in your profile so we can all benefit from knowing that you are COLD!

I bought a bag of Fresh Market (grocery store) lump tonight, because I think it is Royal Oak. The description on the bag of lump and the lighting instructions are the EXACT SAME, along with the same pictures. It cost a little less than the red bag at WalMart. I'll try it and report back, but I think it's the same thing, or at least made by the same people.

Usually during big holiday weekends(labor day, memorial mostly) HD has the combo bags for around $9.50. Last year I "stocked up" and got 100 lbs. Since I had so much I cooked and cooked and burned through it quicker than intended. No one complained though.
