Kettle Performer Gas Start Yay or Nay ?

Like many others, I use the gas assist for lighting the chimney or baskets. The grill comes off and the chimney or baskets sit on the charcoal grate. One thing I have done however is to reverse the basket on the chimney. This way the coals sit closer to the gas assist and I have extra capacity when I need it. Ten years using this Performer and I still love it.

Since we are talking gas assist on performer grills, I'm making a 26 inch performer and was wondering if there is much air space around the pipe that feeds the gas where it goes through the kettle. I was thinking controlling air flow for low and slow cooks could be a problem. Don't know if there is a gasket or seal. If so I would want to get that for mine.

I was thinking my build will cost less and be quicker to build leaving gas assist off but so many of you have shared just how convenient it is to have. I already have a post about this and now I'm ready to add some pictures and show where I'm at with it right now. Any inputs on what you want to see on a performer if you could build one would be appreciated.
