Don't know where all our golden orb weavers have gone. We used to have lots of them. Don't think I saw even one this summer.

When I was growing up there were orbs everywhere in the grassfields behind the house.

Phyllostachys Atrovaginata (Congesta) shooting two springs ago. This year was not so great due to the fifteen below zero night we got with high winds. Killed off all the leaves which greatly restricts the amount of energy the plant can collect. Large amounts of energy, stored over the winter, are required for good shoots in the spring. The shoots in the pictures were a good two inches in diameter and got to 20-25 feet tall.

What is the red and white bird in Hawaii?

Regardless, their physical appearance is strikingly similar with their red head and crest while differing in their grey wings and white underbelly. This species is an introduced and well established resident in Hawaiʻi and has become a common sighting at mainly beach parks.
