Jealous Devil lump

Consider yourself lucky. Very, almost one off, lucky.
Agreed. I get small rocks fairly frequently in any brand of lump, and I've gotten probably 0.5-1 lb. chunk of klinker almost certainly off a kiln wall.

Having said that.....I still greatly prefer lump to briquette in any brand.

I've found a metal shelving bracket in lump, among other things. Was shiny, too. I have yet to find anything but lump in JD.
And here’s the rub...do I spend the $$$$ associated with lump to get the bag that has no foreign material in it, or do I save money buying the tried and true Kxxx and awesome meat to get the same repeatable cook. Every. Single. Time. ???

I’m pretty certain that’s why there are “x” amounts of lump always trying to compete with Kxxx.

My friends might think it’s pretty cool when I tell them the name of lump Ive used, but my wallet says otherwise...

My cook, however, says stay with what you know.

Who here is going to argue with the Professor???

Briquettes

I have only been using JD for about a year because it's hard to find in my area. When I find it, it only stays in stock for a short time. It's not cheap but extremely popular. I have been testing charcoals during the pandemic and have found out a few interesting things. Try cooking with only charcoal with no added wood to form a baseline in taste. Briquettes no matter what brand have a more harsh taste, what I have come to know as BBQ flavor. Lump charcoal has a milder flavor with the exception of mesquite. My experience with JD is the flavor is mild and for a lack of any other descriptive words, cleaner tasting? Just my humble opinion.
