Is Old/Original kingsford still made?

I saw an odd bag off kingsford at walmart,different from the existing kingsford bags though still blue and white. It said original on the bag. There were only two, laying next to a pallet of new kingsford.

Given all the things i've read about new kingsford, and my desire to use briquettes in my new smoker, I guess I have no choice but to get RO briquettes. Not sure how well they work in the smoker but seem to be my best choice, unless local kingsford competition shows ukp.
 
I recall a post not too long ago where someone was looking at a bag of kingsford and wondering the same thing. It ended up being some sort of nostalgic packaging and not the original kingsford that you're thinking of. You're probably looking at the same thing. I'm betting it's the regular "new" kingsford in the bag.

I don't think you will be disappointed using RO briquettes. I like them and they get good reviews around here. Personally I'd try to talk you into using lump if you have a source, but to each his/her own.
 
That's a good characterization, nostalgic, that's pretty much what the bag looked like, but made me wonder if it was the original stuff folks talk about here. I believe you are correct in terms of the bag containing the new briquettes.

I didn't do so well with the RO lump that i used, though have learned a little about the mistakes i made (not packing the lump very tightly or filling the ring very full are the primary mistakes). so, being new to the weber, I thought i would start with a full chimney of RO and add a chimney of RO lump as someone suggested.

Right there is your problem. Start with a full ring and add a half chimney of charcoal. Unless I'm doing a short cook (like ribs), I fill the ring to the point of over filling it. I can get more than 12 hours (closer to 16) out of a ring of RO lump without refilling.
