I will just leave this here

This one is interesting. I wouldn't spend $500 on it, but. it would be cool for a shop grill.

I had one of those I got for $100. A total piece of junk with very limited support. Seemed like a very cool idea when I went and got it. I soon had major buyer's remorse. All I kept was the Snap On logo and a few minor items.

Those toolboxes used to sell for $$$ in the thousands. One of the jet engine mechanics had one that he bought new for $3500 20 years ago. I don't know enough about the toolboxes to tell one from the other but whenever I see Snap-On I see $$$.

Ed,
The quality Snap On puts into their tools and toolboxes definitely didn't find its way into the grill they let their logo be stuck on  .

I kept the logo with the idea of using it on a Spirit grill from the time they modernized the look but still kept the classic 3 E-W burner setup. I would swap in a red Genesis hood, uses high heat silver for the end caps and paint the black doors red. The part I haven't solved is how to find trim that looks like tool box handles to make the doors look like thr front of a Snap-On toolbox. I should have tried harder to keep that stuff from the grill I junked, but it wasn't as easy as it looks, and I just wanted that hulk out of my yard!

Jon, like you, I love the history and timeline and most of all the oddities!

Was this line of grills produced in cooperation with Snap-On?

And I gotta think that an outdoor grill is so much more than a stone's throw from a toolbox. Just one look at the faded and burned paint convinces me that no special consideration was given to this conversion. And once again I am left scratching my head and wondering what the heII were they thinking?

[like your platypus...now those are an odd duck IMO...]

That’s funny! On the Snap-On, I am guessing they just let some company wow them with a lot of shiny - but cheap - flash and took their royalties without a further bit of concern. A total junker in my opinion, and little hope of keeping it going. Scrap metal pike was a fitting end to the one I bought.

On the “platypus” for whatever reason, I absolutely love the look and convenience. Not oversized or hard to maneuver but enough space for food on one side and a Thermoworks Smoke and supplies on the other. Mine is in pieces right now, but it’s return I hope to make extra special. Stay tuned!

free, what appears to be a Genesis 1000 in Jamestown CA ( east of stockton)

Cheap.

Old Genesis Hood.jpg

Not really. Looks like a pretty old Genesis hood, based on the early style handle with the exposed sides on the holders. I would like to have the handle and end caps. $10, yeah - not paying $50:oops:.
