I want to clean and repaint the lid of the used CharQ I just got. What is the best way to remove the lid damper? Just carefully drilling out the rivet from underneath and than replacing it with a nut and bolt? And what type of nut? Regular or lock nut?

Don't use a lock nut. They have a nylon insert. I don't need to tell you what would happen to that :D

No not nylon lock but there are other types of lock nuts. I am just trying to avoid that the but gets loose when turning the damper.

Stefan, Get in touch with Dave in KC. He drilled it out and I think replaced it with a new rivet. But not sure.

I drilled it out and used a bolt and wing nut for now. If that does not work I find some thing else.

I drilled out, and replaced with all stainless - 1 bolt, 1 nut, 1 lock washer and 2 washers.
Easy as pie. I leave the top vent wind open all the time, and let the coals burn off when done.
I have never touched the vent since I did this mod, but I would imagine it still works fine.
