How Do You Do You Have Your Heat Directed

I had read a thread discussing the pros and cons of lit on unlit with the heat going from top down vs unlit on lit where the the heat is coming from the botom up (I hope that makes sense), and haven't been able to find it again. What are your thoughts and what do you guys do? Is anyone familiar with that thread?

I fill the charcoal ring then add a little less than half a large chimney on top of the unlit for long cooks. I've never had an issue with the unlit not lighting doing this (lots of negatives in that sentence but I don't know how else to say it). I've seen a lot of variations (and I've even tried some) but I've evolved into the easy way which in my mind = fill it up and pour the lit on top. Too easy.

Thanks Dave. I was hoping for some input from you Dwain. I've used a couple of your tips and they have really helped. The reason for my inquiry is that I've read that some people have experienced the fire being somewhat smothered by ash when adding unlit on top of lit. My thinking is that with the heat working its way down from the top would minimize the chance of ash choking out the lit coals. Thanks for your input.

Considering heat rises I put my lit on top so it takes longer to burn down, if the lit is on the bottom and the heat rises up through the fuel it will burn faster, to prove this point, light a match, if your turn it so the lit part is down it makes it's way up the stick faster than if the lit part is up, but that's just my MHO.
