Home built stainless grates

I have a Yoder 24" x 48" charcoal grill. After several years, I've burned through the original mild steel flattened expanded sheet grates. Got tired of eating rust.

Equipment....

Miller 400 welder. 240V 50A production welder
3M Speedglas autodarkening helmet.
Fixture table, 24"x48" Fabtop w/ legs, casters and a few accessories. Shout out to https://weldtables.com
Power bandsaw, 4"x6", from Harbor Freight with a good bimetallic blade
Grinding wheels on 4.5" grinders from Pferd-USA. Won't use anything else
Tungsten-carbide rotary chamfer tool sourced from Amazon

I had some jigs cut from a local machine shop, 3/8" notches on 1/2" spaces on 1/2" angle iron

304 stainless stock purchased from Midwest Steel up in Rogers, MN

In the background, you can see the big gravity fed charcoal smoker I built with plans from https://smokerbuilder.com. Those are some seriously good folks.

Onward.....

Still very impressive.
I’ve seen people booger up welds before and this ain’t dat.

On another note,
I always thought it would be cool to build a spot welder to do stainless bars and flats without using inert gases.
I think all you’d need to do it on the cheap is limited conductive jig/clamp a cheap old buzz box, toss in a foot switch and you’re golden.

Nice work!

What grade stainless?

I made a similar grill grate for my Wolf gas grill.

I used 1” square solid stock for the frame. It was drilled to receive the rods. Only the end rods were welded to the bar.

I need to make a new one as I was stupid and did not use stainless rods.
