I’m new here kinda just by chance, been grilling on charcoal as long as I’ve been grilling. When I got my first house my uncle gave me his old BBQ not sure what it is but I tore it apart refinished it and it’s served me decently well the last 6 years. Having open ports for a rotisserie the air vents have not allowed much adjustment in temperature so I’ve had to learn to grill like this although wide open is what I would assume is best for burgers and dogs. Not long ago the ole lady went to move my big heavy bbq and the broke the hinge and tweaked the lid. So I started looking to replace it. (I know my uncle used it for at least 20 years before I got it)
My mother cleans houses and a customer was going to toss out a grill built into a cart. I wasn’t exactly interested, but her high end clients have given us some pretty awesome things over the years. So I asked for pictures. I saw it was a Weber and thought here we go with another big box brand (mind you I don’t know a whole lot about grills). But I liked how it looked, so I got online trying to figure out what it was. A Weber performer with gas assist, look a little further and find out it’s a gen2 performer. Seeing a lot of people like these things I figured screw it I’ll pick it up and try it for the cost of a couple gallons of gas.
Upon picking it up I notice a couple of rust holes in the bottom of the kettle, think to myself I can just weld in some metal and it’ll be usable. Decided on a VHT engine block paint for it. Then decided if I’m going through this much work I’ll get new grates, one touch ash system, so on and so on. Got it torn apart and I started cleaning up the rust spots on the bowl and it starts crumbling away leaving much bigger holes, much bigger….. spot welds for one of the leg mounts I’m assuming were held on with hopes and dreams, the bracket that holds the grates up fell off.
Well not gonna work. Not putting this much effort into it to have a horrible looking kettle.
I felt bad trashing the cart so I decided I’ll buy another kettle and use the UnknownBBQ brackets to mount it.
This past Saturday I picked up a brand new Master Touch in Spring Green to mount to my performer cart. I’m still undecided as to if I want to cut out for the gas assist because this new kettle is beautiful.
I’m happy to be part of such an enthusiastic community.
