Your tips please

Hi all!
Thank you you for warm greetings.
I've started from the left leg.
Took the manual and started to run my 14 WSM: use local charcoals, open the lid went and bottom were closed. Temperature reached 200 and then go down.
I understand that something went wrong -next time open the bottom and open the top -same effect!
May be this is wrong charcoals?
What would the your rules of thumbs?
Are there any good list with advises?
What is preferable: Minion method or standard?
Now got Kingsford ( expensive in Israel!) and wait for Friday to start.
Ah, I did not find how to make notification for answers.

Good cooking for all,
Alex
P.S. What do you think about cancer related issues for smoking?

Alex - good to see you here with your new hobby!
Minion method works great for longer cooks - less need to add coals during the cook. Top vent always fully open for clean ventilation. Bottom vents fully open to start the coals - can reduce bottom vents after coals are going to keep temps from getting too high, but start with slight reductions.
Have fun playing with the WSM!

Welcome Alex! Your country is a beautiful one. 15 years ago, I lived in Ashkelon for 6 months while on a temporary business assignment for the company I was working for at the time. I enjoyed my time there, and I hope you enjoy your time here at TVWBB.
