Happy Thanksgiving Indeed!

Yesterday I hosted my first family Thanksgiving dinner. All the standard fixings, all very good. I hope all you other first-timers out there had as much fun and success as I did.

But the meal itself, though memorable, did not warrant this post. No, something far greater happened yesterday, something which will undoubtedly influence many future Turkey Days...

My lady's parents were due to arrive mid-afternoon. I had just pulled the ABTs and was getting ready to prep the bird when I was kicked out of the house by my girlfriend with no explanation. My dad took me to his hotel bar and told me not to ask questions. Apparently the future in-laws had a surprise in store.

After an anxious hour at the bar watching a terrible football game and thinking how much this delay would push back dinner, we went back home. And look what was waiting in the backyard for me!!!

Shock, lots of shock, still in stock, Wow this thing is amazing!

The cooker is made out of an old air compressor. Everything was put together and welded from scratch. The charcoal grates were also handmade.

I thought about firing it up immediately for the turkey cook, but the weber still had some heat from the ABTs so I played it safe and used the ol' bullet.

So what to do with multiple smokers? Well the weber's finding a new home at the parents house a few hours away, perfect for holiday cooks when lots of people need feeding. And the new smoker, well all I need is a good name to give it!

Wow - nice gift!

But I'll be honest and tell you I'm more impressed with the fact it has a v-band clamp on the exhaust.

If it was a wiggin's clamp I probably would have fallen out of my chair! Nice!

The last 2 pics say it all !!!

wow. what a nice gift. i wouldn't even know how to start cooking on that.

Also, be careful with that bills cover. You may end up having your cooks start out great but then fizzle out midway through

I would have been so excited, gratz! Your own custom offset, I really dig the appearance of it ... <jealous>

Just curious, did someone snap some pics for you of it prior to assembly and paint? It looks very cool indeed. Wasn't sure if you had to assemble it yourself or not.

Thanks so much for the kind words. I'll have to pass them along to the man behind the project.

Jeff- Seriously. If the Bills keep playing this bad, I'm gonna have to get a big brown paper bag to put over the cover.

Tom- Pics were taken during assembly. It arrived in two pieces... thus the need to kick me out of the house for a bit to bolt it together.

To be honest, after I got over the initial shock and excitement, I began to panic for a bit. I mean, I'm just starting to get hang of the bullet, and now I've got to start over from scratch with the type of smoker a lot of people have sworn off.
Don't get me wrong, I'm greatly appreciative of the gift and look forward to the learning experience. But it's daunting. I'm not even sure how I'm going to load the charcoal and wood into the box.
And how much of a heat differential should I expect from one side of the cooker to the other?

It may be some time until I invite all the friends and family over to feast. But I'll keep at it, and maybe I'll bug you guys with pics of the trial runs in the meantime.

Its a sweet challenge to face. Great excuse, if needed, to fire up the new smoker more often. You'll probably figure out how to BBQ with it just like you did the WSM - trial and error.

I cheer for the "other" NFL team that has lost 4 superbowls and chokes down the stretch. But at least we're not Packer or Jet fans.
