Happy Birthday to me! (and Merry Christmas and Happy Anniversary)

Congrats!

But try not to make your spouse jealous.

When my first one was delivered, I spent hours assembling and reconfiguring it, exploring every nuance.

When I finally stumbled off to bed, my wife rolled over with a harumph "I'm surprise you didn't bring that thing to bed".

Finally, after ten years of hanging out on this forum (OK....maybe that's an exaggeration - I think Chris A. has barely been on here that long), and a couple of near misses, I am a Smokey Mountain owner! Twenty-two incher.

After being "out for delivery" for 14-1/2 hours, the brown truck of happiness finally showed up 40 minutes before bedtime. Fortunately, 40 minutes is more than enough time to assemble it. It will take longer for me to download the photos from the camera, host them, and post them here than to assemble the cooker. Photos and more commentary will have to wait until tomorrow evening.

My first impressions before I forget:

That's a big box.

This is a lot heavier gauge steel than my Weber kettle grill. I don't know if that's true, but is sure seems that way. From my experience with my grill, I'd been wondering how the smoker could add up to 75 lbs.

Happy Birthday - It's mine, too! Hope you enjoy your WSM. My 22" is one of my most prized possessions.

My birthday was Dec. 23rd. A couple months ago, my wife asked what I wanted. I told her if I didn't get the smoker for my birthday or Christmas this year, I was going to just go buy one, so she might as just get it as my gift. She tried to talk me out of it a few times. She just thought it was way too much. I thought she'd be more accommodating considering the ribs she's like so much that have come off my improvised OTS smoker. She asked if it were all right if it were also my Christmas present from my family. I said that was fine.

We were travelling the 21st-31st, so the week before Christmas, she decided to reveal my birthday present to me with a piece of cardstock with the smoker photo on it that said Happy Birthday, Merry Christmas and Happy Anniversary (Anniversary is Jan 17). She explained that she put off ordering until it was to the point that it'd arrive while we were out of town, and she didn't want it sitting outside. So I waited until a couple days after Christmas to place the order with the expectation that it'd take at least three work days to arrive. Of course, I used the virtual weber bullet amazon link to give a little payback to the site.

I chose the 22" not because I saw the need to feed 100 people at one time, but because it was obvious from trying to smoke on the 22" OTS that a rack of spares or a brisket packer takes a 22" grate, and I didn't want to resort to heroic measures to make those fit. After researching replies on the forum, I also decided I've never regret having the capacity of the 22", but I could regret someday not spending the little extra on the 22" vs. the 18".

The brown truck of happiness finally shows up at 8:20PM after going out for delivery at 5:38 AM.

My son, Luke, might be more excited at the giant box with all the parts than daddy is. (Yes - his mouth is blue-green. He's been eating a colored popsicle.)

Parts spread out in living room for assembly.

Puddles the duck. He's for Monday night's championship game - duck a l'orange et bleu. But that's for a different post. War Eagle!

Luke demonstrates that you can easily cook a four-year-old in the 22" WSM.

Unpacking and assembly take less than 30 minutes. (Of course, it helps if you've been studying the manual on-line and had the tools lined up!)

Outside the next evening. I have it running without food to burn off the oil and such that was on it. And to generally play with it.

It's a "AA," folks! (2011) Do I win a prize? Is it the first Weber baby of the new year?

I ordered these shortly after ordering the cooker. They came the day after the cooker. They'll go on this weekend before cooking.

And in a related note, my brother got me this for Christmas - as seen in last year's virtual Weber bullet giveaway.

This is a busy weekend, so sadly, I won't get a big cook. I have a leftover turkey breast and two tenderloins from Thanksgiving, and I plan to tie them up in in a little roast and smoke it Saturday. That will make a short, easy first cook to learn the ropes. The other week, I was contemplating out loud what my first cook should be - my ribs are pretty mature, or should I try butts, since that's what I've been wanting to try next. My wife said, "brisket." OK....pretty ambitious, but with the information I've gleaned here over the years, I think I'll be all right. So next weekend will be a brisket.

One last comment - I've shot guns of many calibers, and have reloaded many calibers, but I've never seen a bullet shaped like this. Shouldn't these be nicknamed "Weber suppositories?"

How come that 22" looks so "squat" Is that an optical illusion? Your ,son looks really happy pa!

Many years of smokin' to ya'll.
