Had some crazy black smoke on my first Solo stove burn. Crappy wood from Safeway?

I used this wood from Safeway for my first burn on my Solo Stove, it put off a crazy black smoke that had a petroleum or plastic smell.
I feel bad for the neighbors, one even called the gas company to look for a gas leak, I had to tell the guy what I was trying to do as he used a sniffer all over the neighborhood.
anyway going to try some different wood, looking to pick up some almond at Lazzari’s plant after work tomorrow, I’ll post some pics the place is crazy!
Any thoughts on this wood choice? It is very dirty looking wood.

We have used our solo stove several times now with no such problem. We do get some smoke when we first light it up, but it soon diminishes to a level of almost no smoke. We have also used wood bundles bought at Safeway with no problem.

There's no reason that wood shouldn't work unless it wasn't seasoned properly or it wasn't the kind of wood it says it was. Maybe there was some coating on the stove itself to blame or there was too much wood in there and the fire was oxygen starved.

I can’t speak with any amount of certainty about Bruno’s stove, but there was nothing on ours. When I unpacked it, it was absolutely clean as a whistle. No oils or anything. Just shiny stainless steel. Maybe, but I highly doubt it, there might have been something in the air chamber between the inner and outer portions of the stove. My money is on the wood.

We had a great night in the backyard! Very happy with the Solo Stove.
