Grind Celery Seed?

I've seen a few rub recipes that call for Celery Seed, some in seemingly small amounts.

Though the recipe doesn't say, it seems like I should at least do a coarse grind with them.

Opinion?
 
I grind mine.

I assume any recipe expects you to use pre-ground stuff.

the coarseness of the grind alters the finish. Whole or very coarse spices will better retain their flavor but that will be variances in the taste. One bite might be strong with celery while the next isn't. I often prefer my barbecue this way, but I would never do it for a comp.
 
Yes, I would think the seed should be ground. For a small quantity, I use a mortar and pestle.
