I’m not sure that I’ve ever seen a JJ not in black. So when I came across this little fellow I figured it was worth taking. Very good shape.
I’ve been told these side vented ones are difficult to regulate temps. Any insight with that would be much appreciated as well. 🍻

Nice find.
I don't care for the side vents in use - but I just get these for the collection anyway.

If that;s a SJP like mine the cooking grate is an oddball size, like 3/8" wider than a standard 18.5" grate.
I bought mine just for tailgating and picnics back in 06 when Ace was blowing them out. It works ok on burgers, dogs, sausages, K bobs..
Nice color with the wood handle.
Whats the date code?

Back in The Day, some JJ/SJP owners went as far as drilling out the bottom of the bowl for a single daisy wheel vent so they could get hotter fires...certainly NOT recommended for yours! I think I bought my SJP about the same time Timothy did and probably from Ace as well, and discovered first hand that I didn't like the side vents, either.

As timothy states, that's an 18.5" Smokey Joe Platinum, ["The Outrider"]. DON'T mod it Cody. It's a collector's item. Nice find. It does have an oddball size cooking grate though. Regular size 18.5" cooking grates are too small.

I had a 14.5" SJG (Gold), with the side vents. Not a good design, [imho], as I too struggled to get it hot enough. I gave it away & bought a SJS (Silver) with the bottom daisy wheel vent. Much, much better. However, I did like the tuck 'n' carry of the SJG & wish Weber had incorporated that feature on the SJS.
I do have the carry-case for the SJS, but it can only be used when the grill has cooled.

Did you ever check the top vent for the date code?
