Grandpa/Grandson rib-off (pics)

My almost 11 year old Grandson, Blake, came over for a bbq lesson from Gramps.
His most favorite food in the world is barbecued ribs

We started with 3 slabs of loin backs from Costco. He did his slab on the Performer, and I did 2 slabs on the WSM, along with a fattie. Rubbed 'em down, put in fridge for an hour while the K briq's were fired up.

Smoked mine with hickory, he did his with mixed fruit wood.
Temps on both in upper 200's. Cooked for about 4.5 hrs, and slathered mine with Blues Hog sauce, he used KC Master.
Sides of corn on the cob, sweet/sour tomatoes, stuffed Jalapenos, and a concocted potato dish of boiled new white potatoes, tossed with Ranch dressing, sour cream, shredded cheese, bacon, salt & pepper. I will be making this again!

No great smoke rings, but plenty smoky and tender, moist ribs. The family gave rave reviews for everything.

Waiting on the ribs, with our year old yellow lab that still thinks that she is a lap dog.

Awesome ribs, pic's, family and doggie!!!

My yellow lab 'Otis' is 7 and he still thinks he's a lap dog too! So get used to it!!!

Thanks Larry!

Gotta love labs! Our 14 year old yellow, Kelsey, passed last year, and we wanted to go dogless for a while.
That lasted about a week!

Found a litter that was born on the same day our old girl died, and figured it was fate calling.
Her name is Brooke.

Ribs look fantastic Bob and what a great way to spend quality time with your grandson. Got love that he's got the Qing spirit.

Spending time with family Q'ing is great. My 3 sons all love to cook; grilling and open fire roasting. They all can roast whole hogs on a spit or in an IMU (in ground pit)and now I am teaching them how to Q. My only grandson is 16 and he is a fairly good griller and is already learning whole hog roasting. I think we must pass on our cultural cooking skills to our kids and grandkids...

My 3 chocolate labs all think they are lap dogs!

From the look of the pictures I would name Blake as the winner since he has the ABT's on his grill.

Startin the boy out right thar Bob!

I am sooo.. looking forward to doing the same with our newborn grandson.
Joe Abad said it right!!!
Pass along what we know, as my gramps and my pops did the same for me.
My boys do alright for themselves, but ever so often they have to call the old man for a few tips..

Thanks to all for the comments!

I did forget to mention that the weather was perfect too. High around 75, and low humidity.
Very rare for August here in Missouri.

I only see one issue with your grandsons cooking style.....he's a cards fan! Just kidding great story. Every time we watch the cubs play the cards I laugh when I see that name on the jersey! Poo-holes!

Vince, it must be those rose colored glasses that Cub fans look through. When we see his jersey we see "EL Hombre!"

8 games back eh, plenty of time to catch up!

Seriously though, thank you all for the compliments!

Come on now. Even if the cubs were 8 games up we would still find a way to mess it up. I'm pretty neutral on sports being a native of Chicago. All our teams always go from hero's to zero's! The wife is a die hard chicago sports fan and it always makes for a good time when I go for whoever we are playing. I love getting her going like that. Can't wait for bears opening day. The pack is going to stomp them! Maybe I should smoke some bear burgers on the wsm! Later Vince

Good stuff. q'ing is a great family event. I can't wait for my daughter to be old enough to grill on her own. She's 10 months, so need to be patient.

Did your grandson put those ABT's together? I gotta try some of those myself.

My grandson did 90% of the work on the ABTs, actually these were more like ASTs, since they were stuffed with shrimp and cream cheese. Not my taste or choice, but he had found a recipe that called for shrimp.

Don't rush your daughter, they grow up so fast

Sounds like you may be a Cards fan. Hope you got to see Pujols walk-off homer last night!

Growing up, I was a big Ozzie Smith fan. And today, I have a lot of respect for Pujols. But I'm a Jays fan...except not much to cheer for in a few years. Pretty sad organization.
