Ive been asked by a good friend to smoke some boston butts on my WSM for her daugters upcoming graduation party.
There is going to be 40 to 50 guest.
She will be preparing all the sides, cole slaw, baked beans, potatoe salad etc, about how many butts should I smoke to cover this crowd.
Thanks in advance, and keep on smoking.
 
Using the 50% loss rule of thumb, 30 pounds of raw meat would leave you with about 15 pounds of finished meat, or enough for 60 4-ounce sandwiches.

For a mixed crowd of all ages and appetites, that amount should be sufficient, especially since side dishes will be avaiable.
 
I just cooked 4 boneless butts (Costco) which totaled 25 pounds before cooking for 30 people and that amount was just right. My yield was 12 1/2 pounds....I usually get a slightly better yield, maybe 52-54%. It was a mixed crowd.

The WSM full both racks would be what it would take to feed 50. They will like it, so they will eat most all of it!! The sides may be good, but they cant compare to the WSM hickory smoked Q!! Good luck!
