Genesis Silver B - First Restoration

So just a follow up on my grill rehab, I know there's a lot of talk on grill covers and which are good and what size fits what and how some don't use them at all. This may not be the right place to post this so apologies if it isn't. I wanted something to protect my Silver B rehab just to keep the pollen dust and crap off. New genuine Weber covers are close to 100 bucks. Did a Craigslist search and came up with a Weber cover for sale for $25 (what are the odds, cover only). No info other than it came off a Genesis. Asked if there was a tag on it and was sent this

The 7130 in the lower corner I guessed was the Model and just by sheer coincidence that is the one Weber recommends for an old Silver B according to this chart on their website:

Guess the Grill Gods were with me because I offered $20 and here it sits on my recently restored Silver B. Couple spots that can be wiped off and a little on the long side (height wise) but better that than too tight. For $20 I couldn't pass it up as it is in relatively new shape. Thought that chart above would be helpful to some looking for Weber covers. It's a bit lightweight but if I get a couple years out of it I'll be happy. Besides it's got a Weber logo on it. If I keep this up I'll be gettin' a Weber tattoo soon 😉

I was afraid to put a cover on my grill after I was done restoring it. I thought the cover would rub on the frame that I had repainted and messed it up after a while since the new paint isn't as durable as the factory finish. Let us know how it holds up.

I worry about that as well Steve. But, in the end, it would be the end caps that would rub off and they are aluminum anyway. Worst case if you are concerned about looks is that you might have to repaint them every few years.

My biggest concern though is that, unless the cover breaths really well, you will get a lot of moisture collecting under the cover every day during the summer. The grill gets hot in the daytime sun, then when it cools at night, the moisture in the air condenses on the warm metal under the cover. I have pulled a cover off my grill where I hadn't used it for a few days and it hadn't rained at all, but the grill was wet anyway. So, I try to keep mine in the garage as much as possible between cooks without a cover. Besides, they are a PIA.

If you do use a cover, find one that has vents and does not go all the way to the ground.

Will keep you posted, but this cover seems very lightweight and breathable. Worst case scenario I can make a raincoat out of it for grilling in inclement weather.

I guess I've always fallen into the "no cover" camp anyways. I had the nice Weber cover for my grill when I got it new back in 98. I used it for about 2 years and always thought it was a pain to deal with. It blew off the grill one day during a storm and I never found it, I wasn't too bothered by it and still have the grill after all these years.

Interesting

I have always used a cover and I don't have any rust issues etc. Mine is 23 year old Genesis Silver B. Seems like I get plenty of airflow under it. And then I don't have it sitting with a layer of snow or ice on it for weeks or months. Seems like what little condensate moisture might come from a cover is a lot less water than leaving it open to snow, ice and then rain and thunderstorms in the summer

My Silver A has a cabinet so I decided to cover it. As the cover was just about touching the ground, I found a sturdy cardboard box about two inches high that was close to the dimensions of top of the lid, fitting between the endcaps. It added plenty of clearance and I've found no moisture, but it's on the north side of the house, out of the sun.

I got some Amazon covers that were of a decent material. But they were too long. First I tried to fold them and staple. But later I just cut off 3 inches all the way around the bottom. I like 3+ inches open along the bottom for ventilation

I’ve never been a fan of the Weber covers...too lightweight and overpriced IMO. I’ve learned to shop Wayfair for covers. Their inventory changes over pretty quickly as most of it is closeouts, but I consistently find much higher quality covers at a steep discount there. At the end of last season, I came across a nice, heavy dual layer waterproof cover on there for the Silver B’s and 1000’s that are the bread and butter of my flips. I get asked about covers a lot when folks pick up a grill, so I grabbed a dozen of them at $20 each and sell them for $30. I’m already down to just a couple left, so the value seems to be there for my customers as well.

Grateful for your detailed post! I have a Genesis C (has the side burner), so I'm soaking up your info like a sponge! Interesting to learn about refreshing the plastic shelves...I had no idea!

TomRc, is there a particular model you prefer?
The one pictured below is about to celebrate it’s 4th birthday of year round outdoor exposure and use at our camp and is still going strong. Unfortunately, Wayfair’s inventory changes so often that it’s hard to buy the same thing twice. In general, I have developed an affection for the double layer covers that are truly waterproof if that helps at all.
