I think brake clean would make a mess in this scenario
Most definitely because you don't want to upset the apple cart (meaning the underlying finish) by hitting it with a solvent that will damage it. Brake Kleen works great and some may recall it was me who was the first here to tout it. BUT, and a big BUT, it's not the right tool for this job.
I am a huge proponent of using the right tool for the job at hand or at the least not using a tool that causes more potential damage than you're trying to correct

Good move. No sense repeating the issue
I did a clear coat on top of my Massey Ferguson Gray (which I had let cure for 48 hours) and within 5 minutes it looked like all this wrinkling. Is this what you’re calling “alligator”?

The black part is where I already took a putty knife to scrape it off

Yah, I was thinking exactly what Larry mentioned.

I had a different problem. I had a bottom to a Spirit cabinet grill sand blasted and yesterday I went out and painted it. After I was done painting it, I went to put a hook on it so I could hang it inside the garage to dry. As I flipped it from horizontal to hanging verticle on the hook, it fell off the hook and face down on the grass. Yah, wet black paint and grass is not a good combination. So, today I will be spending some time sanding and repainting. UGGGGHHHHH. Picking off grass clippings from a semi tacky object is aggravating.

When that happens with wet paint on bare metal and I know I will have to re-do it, I go hog with a can of brake cleaner and get off as much as I can. It’s usually costs me a can of brake cleaner, but then it’s done and ready to redo. If it’s a smaller piece of course.

I had the same thing happen to me on a Weber badge that I had painted and then clear coated. I'm positive it was because the paint hadn't cured enough to take the clear coat.

That stinks.

When I looked up reasons it basically said the clear coat solvent “melts through” and reactivates the solvents from the paint underneath because it’s not technically fully cured, even after 48 hours.

Which, given the humidity in my garage, is probably accurate. I’m just so annoyed.

Well, I tried the DupliColor Wax and Grease Remover, had a nice clean dry surface, humidity is under 55%, sprayed in light, even coats…and…

Any suggestions? I do not know what to do.

So as soon as there’s light on it, you can tell it’s uneven and blotchy.
