I think brake clean would make a mess in this scenario

Most definitely because you don't want to upset the apple cart (meaning the underlying finish) by hitting it with a solvent that will damage it. Brake Kleen works great and some may recall it was me who was the first here to tout it. BUT, and a big BUT, it's not the right tool for this job.
I am a huge proponent of using the right tool for the job at hand or at the least not using a tool that causes more potential damage than you're trying to correct
