frustrated...feels like a disaster

Sorry I dropped away - back went out. Still struggling, but a bit better. Just what you want for the holidays, eh?

Do get the Weber chimney - it's really well made and will last forever. As for starting - well, I've seen lots of tricks involving oil, Crisco, lard, and lots of other stuff. I just take two sheets of newspaper, roll each of them up, shove them in the bottom, and come back in 20 minutes to lit coals.

Becky,

I'm not a huge fan of the newspaper ash either. I used to use the Weber starter cubes, but then found firestarters in the organic section of my grocery store that are less than half the price of Weber cubes. 1 of those does a fantastic job starting my chimney with no mess.

Yeah, the newspaper ash is a pain. I use Weber starter cubes because they work great and I got a good deal on them. If I didn't have them, I'd probably go with the paper towel soaked in vegetable oil. I've use that to start a fire in a fireplace and it works great. There's plenty of other alternatives that are better than the news paper.

Either way - glad you got a chimney. They are one of the few additional things I think everyone with a wsm needs.
