Out of my last 40lb. bag of Frontier from Sam's, I ended up with a bucket full of charcoal dust and pieces I deemed too small to mess with, even if using two grates.
As to smokiness, I guess my tastebuds aren't that picky, but maybe one day I'll do some side by side testing if I get another wsm. If a piece of lump looks like it didn't get fully charred, it's still wood, so it'll give you smoke flavor. Otherwise, to me, all charcoal is about the same...maybe a little different flavor to K blue bag, but it might be my imagination, too.
